The Proclamation of the Republic of Brazil took place on this day in 1889, when a military movement led by Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca deposed Emperor Dom Pedro II. This act ended the monarchy in Brazil and initiated a republican regime, with Marshal Deodoro assuming office as the country’s first president.

The transition was driven by tensions between the imperial government and military, political, and economic sectors that sought greater autonomy and modernization for the country.
